R&D Manager / Data Scientist

日本語
藤田肇のプロフィール写真
  • After completing my Ph.D. with a specialization in Machine Learning, I joined an automotive company where I engaged in R&D for specialized in-vehicle systems applying data science. I contributed to the development and practical application of numerous foundational technologies that formed the core of these systems.
  • Subsequently, I served as an R&D Manager at an AI-focused company. In parallel with managing the department, I was responsible for technology strategy planning, leading tech public relations initiatives, and strengthening the intellectual property framework. I successfully managed non-routine projects and resolved numerous business challenges.
  • Most recently, at a reuse technology company, I established and managed the R&D team as a Research Director. I handled a wide range of strategic R&D tasks, including defining research themes, enhancing team structure, and planning collaborative research projects with universities.

Personality

Character

I am a results-oriented individual who finds great satisfaction in achieving goals through my own initiative and effort. I possess a strong conviction in my own judgment and will not accept a direction unless I am thoroughly convinced of its merits. Conversely, once I commit to a decision, I have the determination to see it through to completion.

When a goal is clearly defined and I understand its significance, I am driven to achieve it by any effective means. In my earlier years, this drive sometimes led me to push forward without fully considering the perspectives of others, which occasionally caused friction. With experience, I have learned to temper this determination with greater diplomacy and consideration.

For reference, my 16 Personalities type is "The Commander" (ENTJ).

Aptitude

This character has cultivated my natural aptitude for "leading the room." While this is a versatile skill, I am particularly adept in the following three areas where its conditions are clearly met:

  • Facilitation
  • Presentation
  • Client Negotiation

The essence of my aptitude lies in "driving communication." It becomes especially effective when combined with the application of specialized knowledge.

Reflecting on my career, I have consistently delivered my best performance and achieved significant results under the following conditions:

  • When a visionary leader provides a clear challenge and direction that I find compelling.
  • When I can tackle problem-solving in line with that direction, in a way that fully leverages my natural aptitudes.

Skills

Business & Management

Throughout my career, I have cultivated advanced business skills, making me well-suited for management roles in R&D and specialized IT consulting.

  • Experience leading and managing teams directly under the CTO.
  • A scientific approach to problem-solving through hypothesis, validation, and logical thinking.
  • Expertise in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Data Science (Ph.D.).
  • Strong foundation in computer science and extensive programming experience.
  • Proficient in project management and meeting facilitation.
  • Skilled in engineer recruitment and team building (Certified Scrum Master).

Engineering & Technical Skills

I am also open to returning to a hands-on role as a Data Scientist or Machine Learning Engineer. While I have been focused on management recently, I possess strong and enduring foundational engineering skills.

  • LAPRAS Technical Score: 3.47 (Top 17.27%)
  • Findy Skill Score: 73.4
  • Languages, Databases & Infrastructure
    • Python(Django / Tensorflow / Pandas / Numpy / scikit-learn 他)
    • C / C++
    • Matlab / R
    • SQL(MySQL / Aurora / BigQuery / SQLite)

Experience

Education

  • Ph.D. in Information and Life Sciences Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) Specialization: Statistical Machine Learning
  • M.S. in Information and Life Sciences Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST)
  • B.S. in Information and Computer Sciences Osaka University, School of Engineering Science

Work Experience

  • Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. (DUNLOP)
As a Data Scientist, I was involved in the development of a Tire Pressure Monitoring System. By applying statistical learning, I improved the system from a low detection accuracy (20% false detection rate) to a robustly operational level in real-world environments (less than 0.5% false detection rate), successfully bringing it to practical application within three years of joining the company.
  • FRONTEO, Inc.
As an R&D Manager reporting directly to the CTO, I managed R&D for natural language processing and led various strategic initiatives to strengthen the team structure. Specifically, I drove tasks requiring specialized machine learning knowledge—such as creating the technology roadmap, planning collaborative research with universities, organizing research themes, and assigning team members—to enhance development efficiency.
  • Heart Organization, Inc.
As an Engineering Manager, I was engaged in various strategic initiatives to strengthen the development team and improve performance. Specifically, I led the Scrum development process in collaboration with the Product Owner to vitalize the team, while also driving recruitment strategies to enhance our organizational structure.
  • BuySell Technologies Co., Ltd.
As a Research Director reporting directly to the CTO, I was responsible for launching and managing the R&D team. My duties involved establishing all necessary functions for R&D and getting the activities off the ground, including setting research themes and managing progress, recruiting researchers and strengthening the team structure, managing the research budget, and planning collaborative research projects with universities.
